Using a driveway asphalt sealer is an important step to take in maintaining your home. Whether you decide to hire out a contractor to do a professional job or choose to take on the project yourself, you need to know exactly why using a sealer is so important to homeownership.
The most obvious reason to use a sealer on your driveway is to enhance the appearance of the pavement. The sealer offers a fantastic dark black finish that will make the asphalt look brand new after applying. If you have any stains on your driveway or if your pavement has gone through some repairs and patch jobs, then the sealer will do a good job of hiding and disguise the stains and spots on the surface of the asphalt.
What a Driveway Asphalt Sealer can do
The sealer will do much more for your driveway asphalt than just enhance its appearance. The sealer can also work as a protective second layer, and help to prevent further damage and deterioration to your driveway asphalt. As the asphalt gets older, it will be subject to some harmful elements. One element is that the driveway is always being beaten down upon by the heat of the sun. The UV rays from the sun will heat up the asphalt causing the oil within the driveway to dry out. Once this oil dries out, the asphalt loses its flexibility and becomes very hard. Once the asphalt is hard, it also becomes very fragile and is much more susceptible to cracking.
Another protection and prevention that the driveway asphalt sealer provides are against the settling of water. Driveway asphalt will be filled with nearly microscopic fissures and pores. These fissures and pores will become filled with water when the water seeps into them from something like rain or melting snow and ice. When the water flows into the fissures and pores, it will settle. When the water settles, it may eventually freeze. After the water freezes it expands, and upon expansion, the water will apply tremendous force onto the fissures and pores resulting in cracks in your driveway. A good driveway asphalt sealer will fill in these crevices and pores and assist in limiting the amount of water that seeps into them.
Utilizing a strong driveway asphalt sealer will not only significantly enhance the appearance of your driveway, and by extension, your home, it will also protect the asphalt and increase the longevity of your pavement.
