An asphalt driveway is something that is worth protecting since it is something that often takes a beating from destructive outdoor elements. You should also consider it an investment which is why it is recommended to use a rubberized asphalt sealer when doing necessary repairs to extend the life of your blacktop. It is important that you protect your driveway from common damage that is caused by nature. Here are the steps to seal, and protect your asphalt driveway.
Step 1: Look for Damaged Spots
Carefully inspect the entire asphalt area to include everything. You should not miss a spot. Take note of any cracks, potholes, oil spots, or areas that are breaking apart.
Step 2: Remove Stains
Grease or oil stains should be removed with hot soapy water and a scrub brush with stiff bristles. If the stain is too hard to remove, you can buy a degreaser from your local hardware store.
Step 3: Fill in Cracks before Applying Rubberized Asphalt Sealer
It is common to see cracks in driveways and you will have to repair them before you can apply a rubberized asphalt sealer. Cracks are something you really have to pay close attention to because they will grow wider and longer over time. There are several products available on the market for filling in cracks on asphalt driveways to include caulking tubes, liquid squeeze bottles, and preformed rolls.
Step 4: Patch Potholes
If some cracks have turned into potholes in your driveway, you’ll need fix them prior to sealcoat being applied. To repair potholes, crumbled areas, or deep impressions, you will need blacktop patch which is ready-to-use asphalt that comes in a bag.
Step 5: Prep the Driveway
The driveway must be thoroughly cleaned. You will want to start by grabbing a broom and sweeping away all the heaviest debris. Next, you will want to use a garden hose or pressure washer to rinse off all the loose sand, grit, and dirt. You may have to consider using asphalt cleaner if necessary.
Step 6: Seal the Driveway
It is a good idea to check the weather forecast prior to applying sealer. You don’t want to apply sealer on a rainy day or it may wash away. Make sure you have at least two or three days of dry sunny weather so that the sealer can set, and properly dry. There are different types of asphalt sealers available. Asphalt emulsion sealers are the most popular and most commonly used type of sealer. A recommended type is a rubberized asphalt sealer because they provide the best surface protection and wear resistance.
Step 7: Pour Rubberized Asphalt Sealer and Spread It
It is important to follow manufacturer’s recommendations when applying sealers. For most driveways, you will have to pour a band of sealant that is roughly about 12 inches wide across the driveway. Next, the sealant is pushed and pulled with a squeegee and the process is repeated until the entire driveway is covered with sealant. Next, you will have to take the bristle brush to spread out any extra sealant that may have settled into low spots.
Step 8: Wait and You Are Done
You will have to wait for the first coat to dry anywhere from 6 to 12 hours, and then you’ll have to apply a second coat. Place cones or sawhorses to block the end of the driveway to avoid someone accidentally damaging your new repair. After 24 hours, you will be proud of your newly sealed driveway.
